About Us

Rural Development Council

Rural Development Council enables lasting change in Health, Education, and Livelihood of Dalit, Adivasi women and children.

RDC came into existence in the year 2002 to work towards the upliftment and betterment of tribal communities in Denkanikottai, Krishnagiri district. The most disadvantaged Dalit, Irula Adivasi communities did not have access to basic amenities which furthered their distance from being a part of society. Our focus is on enabling women and children from these communities as they are at risk of being exploited of their basic human rights. Though the government has specific schemes implemented for their welfare, many are unaware of those schemes. Through our initiatives, we encourage them to avail social schemes that are implemented for them by the government. We carry out programmes that can steadily and sustainably promote their livelihood, health, literacy rate and educate them to exercise their rights to have equitable opportunities in the society. In the long run, we aim to transform the society they live in and empower them.

Our focus areas

An integrated approach to build a equitable and empowered society

Mission & Vision

OUR VISION

RDC envisions an Egalitarian society in which indigenous adivasi communities lead a dignified life and secure livelihood resources with access to customary rights over forests, lands and procuring basic human rights especially that of children and women's rights in socio-economic, cultural and political spheres.

OUR MISSION

RDC has been working with multipronged strategies and means to achieve its long cherished vision of attaining dignity, identity and enduring livelihood sources for indigenous Irula Adivasi Communities.

Our Programs

Promoting livelihood

Gender inequality, poor socio-economic status, lack of knowledge about forest produces and marketing were some of the major problems that deprived Irula community from having a proper livelihood opportunities. We began our programme to address these issues and generate awareness about gender inequality and value addition to the forest produces. Our vocational training programme empower women to earn an income and help their families. Further, we reached most remote hilly areas of Thally and Kelamangalam, Kotayurkollai, Thozhuvapetta blocks, and trained local community to utilize the abundant forest produces for their income.

Promoting Health

Lack of infrastructure, distance are two main problems that tribal people face to have access to Primary Health Care centres. As a result, pregnant women were anaemic due to vitamin, iron, and calcium deficiency and new born death records were high. In order to make healthcare facilities accessible to them, we started Tribal Mobile Outreach Services which ensures holistic health development of tribal communities especially tribal women to have safe deliveries, and inoculation for tribal children.

Promoting Education

Education is a key to open all the doors of opportunities. The children from tribal communities did not have access to education due to poor status and lack of quality education. Many were even pushed to work as child labours to earn income for their families. So, we conducted evening study centres, and improved the infrastructure of Anganwadis to educate children, and re-enrol students back to the school and encourage high school graduates to pursue higher education.
