Ability to Give Hope & Choice to the lives of Crash Survivors

The Ability People (TAP), an Indian based international road safety development organisation established in the year 2007. TAP is a non-profit, Non-Government and Disable People’s Organisation in Visakhapatnam (called City of Destiny) and thirteen years old. It was started by a group of spinal cord injury persons headed by the Founder secretary Mr. Dilip Patro, Software Specialist (M/49) and a wheelchair user after SCI (Spinal Cord Injury) in 2007. Our main objective is promotion of welfare of persons with disability - highlighting such issues as health, education and training, accessibility, rehabilitation and employment, accident prevention and disability awareness. Our working area mainly involves Visakhapatnam (present Alluri Sitharama Raju, Anakapalli) covering 925 Gram Panchayats. The district consists of 3265 villages and 15 towns including, one municipal corporation, two municipalities and 12 census towns. We also support people from coastal region of Andhra Pradesh (Srikakulam, Manyam, Vizianagaram, Visakhapatnam, Kakinada, Kona Seema, East Godavari, West Godavari, Elluru, NTR & Guntur) & Andhra, Orissa border.

Our Programs

Project 3R

The Ability People (TAP), an Indian based international road safety development organisation, has taken up a task to promote Project 3R. Awareness, prevention and rehabilitation, with appropriate assistive technology to aid the activities of daily living and a homogeneous method of rehabilitation are urgently needed, comparable to those existing in other countries. It transforms the person's life, and rehabilitation is the key to facing life with dignity.

TAP started by a group of spinal cord injury persons to promote 3R’s (from prevention to rehabilitation) through “Project Bhavishya” in the year 2007 on the following :–
1. Road Safety Awareness,

2. Responsible Good Samaritans-Emergency Care and

3. Rehabilitation for crash victims all over India

Road Safety Awareness

The Ability People organises trainings, seminars and conferences on road safety awareness programme for the following:

1. School & college students.

2. Corporates, PSU, IT, ITES and other institutions.

3. Respective Govt. departments

4. Road Transport Authority, Public transport Dept., Pvt. carriers & drivers.

5. NGO's, DPO's, non-profit organisation & other's working for road safety.

6. In addition, we organise rallies, erection of posters and signboards.

Responsible Good Samaritans-Emergency Care:

The Ability People has been working closely with the Govt. of Andhra Pradesh that is spearheading the revamp of road safety laws in India. Presently, we received orders from the District Collector & Commissioner of Police on helping the road accident victims as well as instructions to all police stations and hospitals across the district of Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh to ensure that the message gets to the last mile. TAP role in lobbying with the Govt. of Andhra Pradesh tirelessly for appropriate action in Andhra Pradesh on the following:
1. The Good Samaritan Guidelines must be widely disseminated in all police stations, hospitals, accident prone zones, Bus station/stands, Railway stations, Schools and College premises and in the schools & colleges buses across the thirteen districts of Andhra Pradesh to ensure that the message gets to the last mile.
2. Awareness building of Good Samaritan Guidelines among general public, especially youth, must also be a part of the process.
3. Educating road users on first aid care to the road accident victims & CPR.
4. Including road safety and emergency care in the curriculum as compulsory subjects for all curriculum.
5. Involving road transport authority, traffic police department, district education officers and district medical & health officers in collaboration.

Rehabilitation for crash victims

TAP initiated Ability Rehabilitation Centre (ARC) for crash victims (Persons with Spinal Cord Injuries (PwSCI) and other orthopaedic disabilities) in collaboration with GREATER VISAKHA MUNCIPAL CORPORATION (GVMC), Government of Andhra Pradesh, Visakhapatnam, India to provide affordable/ free services to the poor and needy.
